Bulimia Nervosa and Dental Problems

Wednesday November 8, 2006

With all the focus on body shape and size for those with eating disorders, secondary symptoms can be overlooked. But for those who purge by vomiting, the risks to oral health are serious.

Stomach acid is hydrochloric acid, a powerful chemical. Tooth enamel is no match for the acid present when purging. The rest of the mouth can develop problems as well.

Dental problems highlight the need for a variety of medical practitioners and clinicians in treatment of eating disorders. With a comprehensive team, those in treatment have the best chance of achieving the best overall health.
