What did you think of "Thin"?

Thursday November 16, 2006

HBO just aired a documentary on four women in anorexia treatment at the Renfrew Center in Cocounut Creek, Florida. If you saw it, how did you react? Was it overdramatized, or did it understate the problems of each woman? What did it leave out that you would have like to see? What changed your perspective? Maybe your understanding of anorexia matched the show's presentation well, and maybe it was dramatically different.

It occurs to me that anorexia is more dramatic to the observer, and that may be why the documentary focused on it. If you have bulimia or know someone who does, it might seem as though you've been forgotten. It's rare that someone sees binging and purging when the process is happening.

I just finished watching “Thin” today. After having worked in an EDP facility, I was shocked at the freedom these girls had. We checked everything and regulated so much more than was shown in the documentary. Then again, I also dealt more with young women that were between 40 and 70 pounds, many of which were classified as “terminal.” While I think this documentary shed some light on the disease, I found it lacking in demonstrating the severity of it. I did like how they showed the anxiety when the women ate. I don’t think many people understand that side of it. I would like to have seen more into how these women got started and delved deeper into the therapeutic treatment. Maybe it needed to be longer, or maybe my expectations were too high. Overall, I’d give the documentary a B-.
