Celebrities and Eating Disorders -- Entertainment or Trigger?

Sunday January 14, 2007

We just can't get enough of stories about the talented, the popular, the beautiful...especially when they show their weaknesses. That's why it's so common to see so many sites describing eating disorders in celebrities.

The problem is that some people sitting at home with their own eating disorders are triggered by looking at these very thin and popular people. A person might head to the kitchen for a binge. Or, she might vow to cut out yet another food from her diet.

But what is it about these sites that is triggering? Maybe it's pictures. Maybe it's hearing the celebrity deny the eating disorder. Maybe it's the fact that these people can be very unhealthy and yet seem to have great lives. Maybe it's something entirely different.

If you struggle with eating, do celebrities trigger you? Drop a comment about what part of information about celebrities makes your eating disorder behaviors worse. And if celebrities don't bother you, what does?
