Unique Eating Disorder Risks With Type 1 Diabetes

Saturday February 10, 2007

Every kind of disordered eating behavior has major health risks. Taking laxatives or diuretics can dehydrate the body to life-threatening levels. The process of binging and purging puts tremendous strain on the digestive system. Overexercising while starving oneself harms the bones. And on and on.

But some with Type 1 diabetes have a new twist on weight control. These persons must take insulin regularly to keep their blood sugar at normal levels. Some of these individuals attempt to lose weight by neglecting their insulin intake.

Clearly, this is an incredibly risky way to try to lose weight. But it's a testament to the power disordered eating has to take over thought patterns and make the dangerous seem normal.
