Maudsley Method Research Continues
Researchers are in the process of performing a new study on the effectiveness of the Maudsley method of treatment for anorexia versus the effectiveness of other treatments.
The study will involve 240 families and take place over the next two years. Spearheading the research are Dr. Stewart Agras and Dr. James Lock, primary developers of the Maudsley method. Half of the families will receive treatment via Maudsley; the other half will receive a family treatment designed to explore family dynamics and their role in the development of the eating disorder. The study will also examine the usefulness of Prozac, which will be given to the underweight family members in half of each group .
It's great that more comparative research is taking place. At first blush, though, I would suggest that it isn't likely that many success stories will occur in the non-Maudsley group. Any treatment program for anorexia will require skilled medical support and an effective nutritional program in addition to family counseling.
The investigation of Maudsley continues. In coming months, look for in-depth reviews of the method as I examine books on the topic for both families and treatment providers.
