"Checking Out" During Binging (and Purging)

Ever read over a paragraph five times before you realized you were repeating it? Or suddenly realized that you don't remember the last three miles of driving?

Most of us have. So it's easy to identify with this "checking out" phenomenon, called dissociation, as it occurs among those who binge eat.

Dissociation makes it easier to do things that we wouldn't normally do, because we're not actually "there" while we're doing them.
