Anorexia Cuts Life Expectancy by 25 Years

Saturday August 2, 2008

Yes, 25 years. A Canadian research group learned that a 15-year-old female who develops anorexia nervosa can expect to live only to age 56. The normal life expectancy for a 15-year-old Canadian female is 81 years.

The estimate (an average) includes the full spectrum of outcomes, from early suicide to full recovery. For those who recover, life expectancy may be restored to a normal length.

Researchers hope that this statistic can jar people into awareness of the seriousness of anorexia. Though the very high mortality rate (5%-20%) is startling, it's easy to think that it's only "other people" who end up dying. The life expectancy statistic includes everyone.
