Is Size a Glass Ceiling?

Wednesday November 5, 2008

Just reading about the New York Fashion Show's usage of size 2 and 4 models last month, rather than size zero. Three cheers, but why stop there?

One person interviewed for the article suggests the reason (one I've heard in other forms before): "There has been some pressure for designers to increase their model size to a 6, but the designers prefer models whose modest curves don’t compete with the clothes." Hey, we don't want to prioritize people over clothing, after all.

This is so easily solved. If the human form is obstructing the work of designers of clothing, then why design for the human form? Roll out some metal shapes for which the designers do want to create, and let them design for those shapes. Let the designers who want to make clothes for women deal with the curves that 99% of women have.
