In an ideal world, all eating disorders would be able to be treated on an outpatient basis without interruption of school or work. (Actually, in a really ideal world, there wouldn't be any eating disorders...) However, given the nature of eating disorders as serious and potentially deadly mental illnesses, many sufferers need a higher level of care for treatment. This can take many forms including intensive outpatient programs, residential treatment and even inpatient hospitalization.
