Definition:

The perception of one's own body.

The body image of a person with an eating disorder is often far more negative than others' opinions of his or her body. Body image often affects a person's overall sense of self-worth.

Negative body image can grow from teasing, abuse, media images, and many other influences. This is especially true for females; women and girls in many societies often believe that their bodies must conform to certain standards.

Pronunciation: BOD-ee IM-ej
Examples: "In addition to working with me on my negative body image, my therapist helped me understand how it kept me from going after my goals."
