Definition: The creation of heat; the "genesis" of thermal energy.

The human body accomplishes this when its metabolic rate rises above its normal level. Exercise and certain ways of eating start thermogenesis. Many drug companies market diet pills based on their ability to increase the metabolic rate and help the body generate heat, with the intent that the heat will burn fat.

Pronunciation: thur-moh-GEN'-eh-sis
Common Misspellings: thermogenosis
Examples: The members of the rowing team felt less pressured to lose weight when they discovered that their regular workouts were enabling thermogenesis.
