Eating Disorder Survivor:
Paul Abdul, popular singer, songwriter and choreographer in the '80s, now has achieved popularity as a judge on TV's
American Idol.
Eating Disorder:
Bulimia nervosaRevealed:
1992
Possible Origins:
Abdul describes herself as a perfectionist and notes the relentless competition early in her career with "tall and skinny" dancers at auditions. Perhaps more influential was the example of others participating with Abdul in a dance camp when she was 15. Abdul was first exposed to
purging at this camp.
Effect on Life:
Eroded self-confidence in spite of consistent high achievement. Self-described as having a "war on my body."
Steps Taken:
Attended Overeaters Anonymous three times per week, beginning in 1989. Engaged in "extensive therapy" at an Oklahoma psychiatric clinic in 1994. Engaged in family
treatment to address
issues with her father and healed some of her deeper wounds. Has provided public service announcements for the National Eating Disorders Association.
Quotes:
"Me and my body have been on two separate sides. We've never, until recently, been on the same side. Whether I was sticking my head in the toilet or exercising for hours a day, I was spitting out the food -- and the feelings."
Comments:
It's noteworthy that Abdul struggles with perfectionism. This is a common trait of those with bulimia. Though she admits to some continued struggles, Abdul's willingness to speak out against eating disorders is positive in her recovery. She also has a good handle on how her
binge eating and purging are related to her emotions.
