Ipecac syrup is a substance used to treat persons who have ingested poison. Ipecac stimulates the central nervous system in a way that induces vomiting, which removes the poison from the stomach.

Dangers of Ipecac Syrup

Taking ipecac syrup is a particularly dangerous way to induce vomiting. In fact, though it is normally used in emergencies, it is still recommended that ipecac syrup not be taken without calling a medical practitioner first. An overdose of ipecac can cause damage to the heart and can lead to death.

Ipecac exists in other forms that should not be taken for any reason. Ipecac tincture and ipecac fluidextract are far too concentrated and dangerous, making it much more likely to create very harmful side effects (again, possibly including death).

Side effects of ipecac include the following:

  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Dehydration
  • Breathing problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Blackouts

Ipecac Syrup and Eating Disorders

Ipecac usage shows how far people are willing to go to purge in an effort to avoid weight gain or lose weight. It is a drastic treatment even for its intended use. If you are taking ipecac syrup, or someone you know is taking it, find a counselor, dietitian, or doctor to help you learn about alternatives.
